Mikel Arteta or Paul Scholes - Conflict over who is the best passing midfielder in the Premier League?

Who are the most accurate passers in the Premier League? Arsenal's Mikel Arteta up there, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Fulham, Swansea and Tottenham stars close behind. But does a Manchester United midfielder deserve to replace him?

Mikel Arteta may not be able to get near the Spanish international squad, but as far as the Premier League goes, he is the closest we have to Xavi.

While the Barcelona star is the most accurate passer in Europe - With an accuracy percentage of 95.1 per cent - Arsenal's Arteta is almost as composed.

Arteta has completed 92.4 per cent of his passes, the most of any Premier League midfielder who has completed 10 starts or more.

The cast of players who follow is a list of impressive talents;

Here are the top 10:

1) Mikel Arteta - Arsenal (92.4)

2) Giorgios Karagounis - Fulham (91.4)

3) Samir Nasri - Manchester City (91.2)

4) Leon Britton - Swansea (91.1)

5) Mousa Dembele - Tottenham (90.8)

6) Tom Cleverley - Manchester United (90.3)

7) Jon Obi Mikel - Chelsea (90)

8) Shaun Maloney - Wigan (89.8)

9) Joe Allen - Liverpool (89.7)

10) Aaron Ramsey - Arsenal (89.3)

But before we all hail Arteta, hold on, is there a late challenger to his crown? Technically speaking, there is a Premier League midfielder with a higher passing completion rate than the Spaniard.

That man is Manchester United's Paul Scholes - who narrowly tops Arteta's 92.4 completion rate, recording 92.5 per cent.

However there is conflict over whether his efforts deserve to be compared with Arteta - Simply because Scholes has only made seven Premier League starts compared with the Arsenal midfielder's 25.

This means there is more margin for error, and Opta's statistical website whoscored.com lists the top passers as those who have made 10 starts or more.

To compare, Scholes has made 711 out of a possible 769 passes attempted, while Arteta has completed 1,954 passes from 2,115 attempts.

Scholes has however made 14 appearances, with seven as a substitute, so you tell us - Is his omission from the top of this list unfair?
