Newcastle United fans may not approve of anything he says or does, but Michael Owen has declared his intention to setup a management company aimed at protecting younger players.
Michael Owen is reportedly one of the nicest people anyone could ever meet, which is the basic reason why he could be one of the best agents over the next years that football has ever seen.
Owen is not going back on his decision to retire, despite his own admission that he didn’t expect the level of support and well wishes he’s received since he officially announced the news.
Speaking on Sky Sports News yesterday, he’s made it clear his next two aims are some media work and the chance to create his own management company which will look after younger players.
The reason he’s perfect for this is not just his personality, it’s because he was thrown into professional football at a very young age himself, so he knows precisely the areas where a younger player needs extra added protection.
This doesn’t just mean protection from third parties looking to exploit players, it means protection at all levels, from injuries and the chance that a career could be threatened before it has even begun.
That gives him a solid knowledge of the way those teams work in terms of going about looking for players, tapping them up, trying to sign them and anything else related to the game in a transfer sense.
A stint in media work will also allow him to build on the contacts in football that he already has, which is important for anyone looking to the world of professional football management.
It will give him a greater scope when it comes to his players interests and the way he wants certain news about people he represents to be treated with respect, fairness and common courtesy.
He also seems to have invested well, which is important for any young player because teenagers are now being paid more to play football than ever before.
Owen has gone down several routes such as property and he’s also invested in horse racing, which is something he still seems to be very keen on. He’s well placed to tell any sensible young man how to handle that level of cash, the best way to spend it and the best way to look after it.
Do you think Owen will be a good agent?
