Why Liverpool should meet River Plate's demands for German Pezzella

Liverpool have been linked with a move for centre back German Pezzella who currently plays his football in Argentina for River Plate.

Liverpool are on the hunt for a defender this summer as they won’t have the experience and quality of Jamie Carragher to fall back on next season.

The club have been linked with a number of different options but none have been more interesting or exciting than Argentinean German Pezzella. There are several reasons why Liverpool should go after the 21-year-old.

Firstly, he’s huge for his age at six feet tall which means he’ll have a solid physique and good core strength which will allow him to be competitive in his position as soon as he arrives in England.

That will be an important factor should Rodgers decide to go after him because he’ll want someone he can use quickly, as Liverpool don’t have a massive squad of players they can fall back on.

He’s already had a solid career at international level although he’s yet to make his senior debut for the national side.

He's accumulated 26 matches for the Argentina Under-20 team and scored two goals in the process. He has also been part of the Under-22 squad although he is yet to make his debut at that level.

The potential he has seems to be very high, which is something Brendan Rodgers will probably be looking for in a new defender. He will want to sign someone who can do a solid defensive job but also develop his game alongside the team’s transition.

It’s also important to point out that he was captain of the Argentina Under-20 side, so he’s bringing more to the table than just a solid defensive game which will turn him into a reliable centre back.

One of the areas Carragher is so efficient is through his basic leadership skills on the pitch. He’s able to structure and organise the defence, seeing passages of play before they’ve occurred and giving Liverpool the best chance to cope.

That leadership ability seems to be something that Pezzella has had from the earliest of his teenage years and it will make him important in a Liverpool defence, which may go into next season in a slight cloud of uncertainty.

This is definitely a signing Liverpool should consider. Rodgers may also draft in a more experienced centre back but if the links to Liverpool are true then the club would be naïve to ignore this player, because he’ll just end up at another top quality European side with Liverpool cursing their luck.

Liverpool fans, what do you make of these rumours?
