Jonjo Shelvey has had a very mixed season at club and international level. It’s almost as though everything came far too fast for him to take him, which has seen him dropped from the England senior side into the Under-21 side.
The good news for both club and country is that it doesn’t seem to be affecting him too much because he produced a solid display against Austria’s Under-21 side, which suggests he can still play a big role for Liverpool over the rest of the season.
In typical fashion, he didn’t mess around with this free kick just on the edge of the Austria area, he decided to smash it as hard as he could and it worked, because it flew in with the goalkeeper having no time to react.
It may have been pointless for him to try and curl it in because the ball wouldn’t have had much time to dip and come back down, plus that’s not the sort of player he is.
The goal will do him the world of good and will boost his confidence as he heads back to Liverpool. He has been overtaken by certain players in the Liverpool team and he should now have the determination to get back into the side, as the race for the top four hots up.
