Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender could become an option for Liverpool this summer.
Lars Bender is a player who has been linked with a possible move to Manchester United this summer but there’s a very simple reason why Liverpool may have an edge if they were interested in signing him.
That edge comes in the form of former player and club legend Sami Hyypia, who is the current boss of the Bundesliga side that Bender represents at the moment.
Hyypia always had a good relationship with the coach and the fans during his time at the club, so if Brendan Rodgers is willing to pay a good market value price for Bender, it seems quite straight forward as to why Liverpool may have first refusal on him.
Bender is certainly a player who could help the Liverpool midfield as he can play in multiple positions and he has the sort of attributes, which Rodgers seems to like in his players at the moment.
He will be looking for someone who can play slightly wider in the side because Liverpool have a core of central midfield players who run the team in the middle of the park, which he won’t want to break up.
He’s bagged three goals and three assists so far but more remarkably, he’s only been booked on a single occasion which shows he has superb discipline as a midfield player.
Rodgers could use him in a number of ways. If he wants to use him out wide then it releases some of the pressure on Raheem Sterling and Stewart Downing who have been two of the primary wide men this season.
If he does want to use him through the middle then he’s good enough to release someone like Steven Gerrard or Philippe Coutinho or even temporarily replace them in the team.
He’s not going to be best suited to playing a Lucas type holding role in the middle of the team but that’s not the reason Liverpool would be buying him.
Unless Hyypia is crippled by those above him in the food chain at Bayer Leverkusen then he could be very kind to his former club but if it’s out of his hands then Liverpool may miss out, because they simply don’t have the same amount of cash as other clubs interested in him.
Do you think Bender would be a good fit for Liverpool?
