1. 1923 - In Italy, Benito Mussolini grants women the right to vote

2. 1937 - The former King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Edward VIII, marries Wallis Warfield Simpson, the American divorcee for whom he abdicated the British throne

3. 1943 - The Russian army takes down 162 of 500 Nazi planes in one of the biggest air battles of World War II

4. 1952 - Frank Sinatra records Birth of the Blues

5. 1962 - 130 die in a Paris air crash after an Air France Boeing 707 crashes on take-off at Orly Airport killing all but two of those on board

6. 1963 - Pope John XXIII the 261st Pope of the Roman Catholic Church dies at age 81 less than 5 years after becoming Pope

7. 1968 - Andy Warhol, the American artist, is shot and wounded in his New York film studio, The Factory, by actress Valerie Solanas who founded the 'group' called S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting up Men)

8. 1982 - Shlomo Argov, the Israeli ambassador to Britain, is critically ill in hospital after being shot on a London street

9. 1986 - Tennis player Rafael Nadal is born

10. 1989 - Chinese troops storm through Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing, killing and arresting thousands of pro-democracy protesters

11. 2009 - New Hampshire becomes the sixth state in the United States to make gay marriage legal
