1. 1697 - The rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral is officially opened

2. 1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte is crowned Emperor in Paris by Pope Pius VII

3. 1916 - President Woodrow Wilson turns on the light of the Statue of Liberty for the first time

4. 1954 - US President Eisenhower announces the signing of a pact of mutual security with the Nationalist Chinese Government

5. 1956 - The yacht Granma arrives on the shores of Cuba, after travelling from Mexico where Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and 80 other members of the Cuban Revolution movement disembark to begin the Cuban Revolution

6. 1976 - Fidel Castro becomes The President of Cuba 

7. 1977 - A demonstration erupts outside a South African court as a magistrate rules no police are to blame for the death of the leader of the black consciousness movement, Stephen Biko

8. 1981 - Britney Spears is born

9. 1988 - A bus full of school children and teachers is hijacked in southern Russia. The two armed men demand to have an airplane at their disposal

10. 1995 - Nick Leeson is sentenced for six years for financial dealings which contributed to the fall of Barings, Britain's oldest merchant bank

11. 2001 - The Enron Corporation files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a New York court, sparking one of the largest corporate scandals in U.S. history
