3. 1947 - Movie studio executives meeting in New York agreed to blacklist the 'Hollywood 10', who were cited a day earlier and jailed for contempt of Congress when they failed to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee

4. 1957 - U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffers a stroke

5. 1960 - Scottish Parliament met in order to protect the alleged existence of the Loch Ness Monster. It was reported that a group of young English men were planning on dropping homemade bombs into the water in order to send the creature to the surface

6. 1963 - The funeral of the John F Kennedy takes place in Washington

7. 1969 - John Lennon returns his MBE in protest against British involvement in oversea wars

8. 1973 - Greek President George Papadapoulos is ousted in a military coup after weeks of unrest

9. 1980 - Sugar Ray Leonard regains his welterweight championship title when he defeats Roberto Duran

10. 1984 - The 44 group members of Band Aid, which was founded by Bob Geldof to help raise money to assist famine stricken Ethiopia, recorded the single Do They Know It's Christmas in a London studio 

11. 1989 - The All-Blacks extend their unbeaten run to 46 matches when they beat the Barbarians by 21 points to 10 at Twickenham
