Whilst the summer transfer window is still months away, and most clubs will be focussing more on the remaining games in their season, when a club like Sporting makes it clear that they are looking to offload players then early business becomes a real possibility.
This has already been shown by Norwich agreeing a deal for their Dutch striker Ricky Van Wolfswinkel. Despite agreeing a £8.5million deal for the forward, Sporting are reportedly still keen to get high earners off their wage bill, and Diego Capel has been mentioned as a possible transfer target for several clubs in the past.
Tottenham Hotspur themselves apparently made two bids for the winger when Juande Ramos was in charge at White Hart Lane, and whilst their interest has dimmed with the incredible rise of Gareth Bale, they might be tempted if a bargain was available.
Bale now spends most of his time drifting infield, and the need for extra wingers in the squad has been highlighted by his recent suspension and Aaron Lennon’s injury. Whilst there is a risk that Andros Townsend’s development could be hindered by having another man in his position in the squad, Spurs need to have experienced players to cover the first team if they want to compete at the highest level, and Capel would be a smart addition.
Liverpool and Swansea City have also been linked with Capel in the past, but reports suggest they will not go in for the player, leaving Spurs and Daniel Levy a clear run to negotiate the best deal possible.
Capel is not a world beater, but he has plenty of experience and at 25, will likely be playing at his peak over the next few seasons. The Premier League is increasingly a test of how good your squad is rather than the quality of your first team, and if Spurs could bring in the Spaniard to add cover on their flanks they would undoubtedly have a stronger squad for next season.
Do you think Diego Capel would be a good addition to the Tottenham squad?
