How a USA Stint Will Reignite Clint Dempsey’s Tottenham Form

Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey enjoyed a massive boost in morale as he bagged the winner in the USA’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

Clint Dempsey has not had his best ever season at Tottenham Hotspur this year. He’s struggled to nail down a starting place, at a time when the side has been genuinely short of forwards.

Dempsey’s Premier League stats this season don’t make for very impressive reading with just five goals in 22 appearances for the club, to go with only three assists which is also below average for a player of his quality.

The international break seems to have come at the right time for him and his winner against Costa Rica will do him the world of good, because he’ll go back to Spurs with fresh and renewed energy.

He is in a Tottenham team which is achieving great things this season and looks as though they are going to finish fourth, which means Champions League football and a crack at Europe next year.

Dempsey has probably never been in and around such a competitive squad before during his career, which makes it important that he maintains his self belief and momentum to give himself an edge over other players at the club.

He’ll go back to Spurs with an entrenched determination to firstly, get into the side and secondly, to ensure that Andre Villas-Boas has no reason to drop him over the remaining games.

He may have half an eye on the summer because all of the indications are that Spurs will bring in another striker, which will further jeopardise Dempsey’s place in the starting eleven.

His performance for the USE will also give him the belief and confidence that he is good enough to lead an attack through important games, which is significant as he’s struggled at Tottenham when his side has looked to him to score the goals and create the best chances.

Spurs don’t quite seem to know how to use him at the moment, which is a situation that’s been created because AVB has so many good attacking midfield players to choose from, which is where Dempsey’s at his best.

He is a solid number ten if that’s how the club want to use him and his form for the United States is a huge plus for the club, because it will give Dempsey a lift at a time when he is under pressure at club level in a big way.

Do you think the international break has done him good?
