One of the shocks of the World Cup Qualifiers last night was Iceland triumphing 2-1 at Slovenia. The Slovenians were expected to win in their home tie against Lars Lagerback’s side considering the 40-odd places that separate the nations in FIFA’s Official World Rankings.
But obviously nobody had told Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading and Hoffenheim star inspired his nation to an important victory with two vital goals in Ljubljana.
While Gareth Bale has been receiving the plaudits recently Sigurdsson is perhaps showing his best form since joining Spurs in the summer.
Milijove Novakovic gave Slovenia the lead in the first half but nobody was stopping Sigurdsson from taking all three points away in the Group E tie.
His first goal was an absolute gem. He has been known in the past to score the occasional cracker; especially from free-kicks but this one is ludicrous in its execution.
But Gylfi was not done there and set about being the toast of his nation this morning by grabbing the second goal of the game. After receiving the ball from former Tottenham and Chelsea player Eidur Gudjohnsen he took a neat first touch before side-stepping his defender and smashing the ball past Inter Milan stopper Samir Handanovic in the Slovenia goal.
The result leaves Iceland in joint second place with Albania; just one point off Group E leaders Switzerland.
Expect an argument the next time Spurs get a free kick with Bale and Sigurdsson on the pitch.
