Several press reports from Portugal are claiming that Manchester United have agreed a deal for the Benfica defender.
Manchester United have been linked with Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay for a number of months and they are reported to have agreed a deal, which will go through when the summer transfer window opens.
If the reports- in Portuguese newpaper Record entitled 'Manchester United wins race for Garay' are true then the deal is worth 20 million Euros and Sir Alex Ferguson has purchased the defender he probably sees as taking over from Rio Ferdinand, once the England man retires.
There are several reasons why this is a very positive signing for the club if a deal has actually been agreed because Garay seems to be a very talented defensively minded player.
His height and power alone offer the United defence something they don’t already have and it also makes him a very imposing figure, whether he plays alongside Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic.
However, the fact there is nothing coming through the mainstream press sources in the United Kingdom suggests these reports may be a little premature, that or they don’t want to report the news until it’s been made official.
Garay seems to have turned his form around at Benfica after a frustrating spell at Real Madrid where he made only 25 appearances for the La Liga giants in total.
He’s represented Argentina at two different levels and is one of the current crop of defenders for his country, who is consistently picked whenever the national side meets up.
Sorry for another if, but if the reports are true then United fans shouldn’t be too surprised because Ferguson has done this sort of deal before during his time at the club, as it prevents United’s rivals from getting involved in the summer or January windows.
Current first team star Javier Hernandez is a good example of a similar sort of deal with United agreeing a deal with him in principle, before it went official to ensure that they got their man.
Garay seems to be a very good ball player, a player who likes a challenge and a player who seems quite balanced as a centre back, which should ensure he fits into the United side easily.
However, don’t get too carried away until this has been made official and appears as a featured story on the United website.
Good signing United fans?
