Fabio Capello: Why Chelsea have dodged a bullet

Fabio Capello has played down links, suggesting a summer switch to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea fans haven’t had a lot to sing and dance about this season, but the fact Fabio Capello is unlikely to be their new boss over the summer is certainly something to cause just that.

While Capello is hard to beat in terms of his experience and record, he has the personality which would put him on a crash course with Roman Abramovich, that would pop up sooner or later.

The current boss of Russia has always had a very strict way of doing things and he doesn’t seem to be afraid of trying to change things in terms of the way a team is handled and run.

The last boss who tried to come in and change things dramatically at Chelsea, was Andre Villas-Boas and he didn’t last a season in charge of the team.

AVB encountered numerous problems at Chelsea as he lost the backing of the more experienced professionals, who were not willing to adopt his new methods and change their ways.

This is one of the main reasons Capello wouldn’t work at Chelsea. His strictness, his demand for respect and his authority is something that would create friction between himself and many players at the club.

He doesn’t appear to be a boss who likes to be controlled or talked down to either, which is where a conflict with the owner could develop.

Capello is a boss who likes complete control, which is still thought to be the reason he resigned as the England manager, effectively because he wouldn’t toe the line for the FA on certain subjects.

As soon as Abramovich started to get involved, whether it’s opinions on the team or a player he wants the manager to sign, Capello has proven himself to be the sort of boss who will just walk away rather then endure the conflict.

It’s also not the popular choice with the fans, with the majority wanting to see Jose Mourinho or Roberto Di Matteo return to the club.

Therefore, the fans would be on Capello’s back in the same way they have been on Rafa Benitez’s case ever since he took the interim job. Again, Capello won’t endure that, he’d walk away as soon as performances started to dip.

Chelsea have a massive decision to make this summer and the Italian is certainly not the perfect man for the job.

Chelsea fans, are you happy Capello is playing down the links? Do you want him?
