Tottenham Hotspur latest: Including Bale and Assou-Ekotto fitness updates

Assou Ekotto

All the latest Tottenham Hotspur news and views.

After Dundee manager John Brown yesterday urged Scotland to kick Gareth Bale to stop him, Spurs fans may well have been worried about the fitness of their star player. This is particularly true seeing as Charlie Adam is part of the Scotland side, and has twice put in very bad tackles on the winger, for Blackpool and Liverpool which led to a very public feud last summer. Adam has today insisted the pair have since buried the hatchet and he would even swap shirts with him after the game, but he may not get the opportunity to.

This is because Bale is suffering an illness which is threatening to rule him out of the match, which kicks off in 24 hours time, and his status is current uncertain. However Wales boss Chris Coleman is 'optimistic' the Spurs man will be passed fit, even though he has not trained all week prior to his first session with the squad today. The virus has been so severe that Bale has not been able to eat, Coleman went onto say. The manager did comment though that he would take no chances with his fitness. Overall it is probable he will be involved at some stage in the match.

Another Spurs player who has been a question mark over is Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Last night it was claimed the left-back had withdrawn from the squad to play Emmanuel Adebayor's Togo due to personal reasons, but this has since been disproved. The BBC reported this afternoon that he has arrived with the Cameroon squad, where he is willing to give his all for his country in what will be his first international appearance in two years.

With the race for fourth intensifying, we have taken a look at the five players Spurs can least afford to lose to injuries as a result of the international fixtures.

Tottenham's youngsters missed out on a chance to reach the last four of the NextGen Series after losing a thrilling quarter-final to Sporting Lisbon last night. The game finished 3-3 within the 90 minutes and went to extra time, with Sporting winning out 5-3. The fourth goal was a wondrous 45-yard effort. HITC writer George Sessions was at the game and has written a full match report to read here.

In a report by the Metro yesterday which claimed Spurs were to be offered winger Diego Capel, a throwaway line wrote the club were looking to sell Iago Falque this summer. We have taken a look at his loan progress with Almeira, and offered a view why Spurs should in fact be looking to keep him as part of the squad next season.

Sandro is still on the road to recovery, and is doing so in his homeland with former club Internacional. He told the Brazilian press that he is more comfortable in Brazil and the decision has been approved by Spurs and their medical team.

And finally, Ledley King has been backing Spurs to win the Premier League title within the next two years. We have assessed his claims and looked at just how accurate he is and what Tottenham need to do to ensure he is right.
