Gaming luminary shows off iPad and iPhone game he left Double Fine for.
Adventure gaming legend and fan-favored developer Ron Gilbert has revealed his latest effort, Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG.
Labelling it “SSITVTDTUSS:AMMTPRPG” for short, the iPad and iPhone title looks to be a return to pirate themes for the Monkey Island co-creator, with the famed game maker teaming up with DeathSpank co-creator Clayton Kauzlaric.
Based on a prototype version they both developed called “Realms of Gold”, the game originally hoped to ape the mechanics of popular casual games such as Bejeweled but with an added RPG story.
“We were told by the publisher that no one wanted to play a match-3 RPG, so that part of the game was watered down,” he commented in his blog. “Of course, a year later Puzzle Quests comes out and sells a billion copies.”
Since then, Gilbert and Clayton have been working on the title to make it sufficiently different than competitors and substantial.
“We have close to one hundred different hats, shirts, heads, swords, etc you find and use to dress up your pirate,” Gilbert explained.
“There are also ten different ships to build, plus a sea shanty you collect that is sung by real life pirate singers (they work for grog, quite inexpensive).”
