Werder Bremen admit they cannot afford to buy De Bruyne from Chelsea

Werder Bremen Training

Kevin de Bruyne will not be joining Werder Bremen permanently this summer.

Last week Werder Bremen revealed their financial results, with the headline figure an eight million Euros loss.

We speculated in the wake of this that the development would make any permanent deal for on loan Chelsea winger Kevin de Bruyne unlikely, and so it has proved.

Bremen's sporting director, Thomas Eichin told Bild yesterday: "The sums that are called for him, we can not buy right now."

The news may come as a relief to Chelsea fans, yet to see De Bruyne in a Blues shirt in a competitive fixture, with the Belgian enjoying his football in the Bundesliga.

The 21-year-old has six goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga this campaign, including three assists and two goals in his last five matches.

But Bremen have not entirely given up.

No, they are hoping to persuade Chelsea to loan him out for one more year, just as West Brom are crossing their fingers Chelsea will remain generous with regard to fellow Belgian, Romelu Lukaku.

Eichin added: "I have a lot and often have contact with Kevin's agent. We can do against Chelsea, Kevin and his agent only shows that we believe in his development Werder is the right club. He regularly plays with us."

He is right in that De Bruyne will go from a sure starter at Bremen to having to fight for his place at Chelsea, and could fall into a similar trap as Marko Marin.

Yet if the winger, and Chelsea, do not try it out they may never know. De Bruyne has overshadowed Eden Hazard in the Belgian national side on occasion, and playing with and competing with his international teammate will surely only spur him on.

We expect Chelsea to bring him back next season. It is all well and good stacking up these talented stars for 'the future', but De Bruyne's form shows there is no time like the present to get him involved.

Do you expect Chelsea to keep De Bruyne next season?
