Should Manchester United and Liverpool consider an unprecedented swap deal?

Manchester United and Liverpool both have underperforming players, should they look at swapping them?

If Sir Alex Ferguson feels he needs a defender this summer, he could do a lot worse than going after Liverpool’s Slovakian centre back Martin Skrtel.

That wouldn’t be a popular deal with Liverpool fans but they could conceivably get a good player in part exchange, in a position where they could use an extra body and some extra experience.

United have plenty of players who can play in wide positions as well as defensive and attacking stars who have shown a solid ability to adapt to a wider role such as Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa.

One player who has failed to step up this season is Ashley Young, who signed for the club almost two seasons ago. United could use him in a deal to sign Skrtel, who could be a very good long term replacement for Rio Ferdinand who isn’t getting any younger.

It’s also Skrtel’s Premier League experience that would appeal to the Old Trafford side, as he guarantees consistency and the fact that he won’t need any settling in period.

The potential partnership of Skrtel alongside Nemanja Vidic in the United defence is something that would put a lot of strikers off of their game, just through seeing the names on the team sheet.

Skrtel is also good enough in terms of his ability on the ball and his control to be able to play the ball out easily from defence in a creative manner, which is something United favour. He can also hoof the ball away with the best of them.

Liverpool are blessed via their youth system in terms of the quality they inject into the first team but Brendan Rodgers could jump at the chance for an experienced player, who wouldn’t actually cost the club millions of pounds.

Young may also relish the chance to get stuck into a new team where he would receive more of a chance than he’s getting at United, and where he would undoubtedly be the leading wide man if he can stay fit.

He may also enjoy the leadership side of a possible move to Anfield because the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jordan Ibe would look up to him, while someone like Stewart Downing who he played with at Villa would stop him from getting complacent.

It’s a possible deal because Skrtel has already created a bit of friction between himself and Rodgers and Young has not been getting the volume of games for United because his position is over subscribed, and Wilfried Zaha arriving in the summer won't help.

It would also be fascinating to behold in terms of a fan perspective because each player would be going to a rival club and each would be bound to receive a tide of verbal abuse when returning to their old grounds.

What do you make of this potential deal? Every chance or no chance?
