Why Manchester United’s 20th title would be Fergie’s Greatest Achievement

If Manchester United wrap up the Premier League title, it could be Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest achievement.

Manchester United will have to endure some sort of bizarre crisis if they are to let Manchester City back into the title race from their current position, with a 15 point lead.

United are very close to securing the title, a title that some United fans would have been fearing would head to the other side of the city for a second season in succession.

Regardless of the fact United are out of the Champions League and face a tricky FA Cup replay against Chelsea, it’s been a superb season, even if they only wrap up the league title.

Such is City’s current standing in the game, both financially and in terms of potential, it’s remarkable how United have completely blown them out of the water this season with only a couple of subtle squad changes last summer.

Ferguson has often been made to endure challenges and threats throughout his career at the club. First it was Liverpool, then Blackburn, then Arsenal, then Chelsea and now it’s Manchester City.

The point is that City have the power both on and off the field to dominate the game. They can effectively buy who they want and they have a good and consistent enough team to win everything in a single season.

It’s that fine line which makes the likely title number 20 very special this season. That fine line that City stepped across last season when many United fans would have been hoping that City would never buy their way to a Premier League title.

In the face of that Ferguson has built another great side with the addition of an experienced striker last summer, which has helped the club to blow plenty of other sides into the middle of next week.

He was also forced to endure a crisis of sorts at the start of the season when United started letting in the ratio of early goals, you would associate with a side on the verge of going down and not challenging for the title.

United started the season with barely any fit defenders, which routinely put the attack of the team under pressure and caused Ferguson to think outside the box more than ever before.

Ferguson has had nearly every decision he’s made scrutinised this year because his team have been chasing City. The gap between the two is now huge but City are still the current champions and will threaten for many seasons to come so hat retention of power and success for United becomes all the more significant.

United fans, best title yet?
