Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane and Juventus star Paul Pogba have both been drafted into the French national squad.
The French may have often been criticised throughout history but no one can argue that they don’t produce a damn good footballer every so often.
Two of the game’s best prospects; Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba have been called into the French World Cup qualifying squad for their next two matches against Georgia and Spain.
Many won’t be surprised that Varane is in the squad after the way he’s played a telling part in the Real Madrid side recently, which secured back-to-back wins over Barcelona and dumped Manchester United out of the Champions League.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been kicking himself ever since being unable to prevent Pogba leaving the club for Juventus where he has bagged five goals in 20 games, not bad for even the most experienced midfield players.
Varane will probably be under the most pressure because of the fact he’s a central defender and doesn’t have anywhere to hide. He will be exposed, especially in the match against Spain, where his technique will be tested to the limit.
For Pogba it’s a very big deal because he is yet to make his senior debut for the French international side, which could be one of the defining moments in a very promising career.
Real Madrid have got Varane on a very long contract which suggests he’s not going anywhere this summer despite any rumours or speculation to the contrary.
He looks set to become the club’s key centre back over the next few seasons and he owes a lot of that to Jose Mourinho who has given him the chance to work his way into this position.
Pogba is at Juventus until 2016 but doesn’t strike me or anyone else as the sort of player who will remain overly committed to any one side, if the right offer comes along.
He’s not exactly modest either because he’s suggested it’s just the start of a promising career, promising that there is more to come from him over the rest of the season and the next one or two years.
Hopefully for Pogba’s sake, he won’t look totally out of his depth.
What do you make of this pair?
