Stats show Swansea City star is the 'Bravest' in Europe

Swansea City defender Ashley Williams, a target for Arsenal and Liverpool, has another title to boast of.

Swansea City defender Ashley Williams has enjoyed a terrific couple of seasons, he has established himself as a top Premier League defender, won the League Cup, and become Wales captain.

The 28-year-old's performances have been so good he has been earmarked as a potential summer target for Champions League place chasers Arsenal and Liverpool.

Where he will be playing his football next year, it is too early to estimate, we're not even sure Williams knows himself yet. What we do know is that his stock is rising by the week.

Potential suitors may therefore be interested to learn that Williams can now be heralded as 'Europe's bravest defender.'

The statistics which back up, or create this claim, are figures which show no player in any of Europe's top leagues has blocked more shots than Williams - 41.

Williams also records the highest average number of blocked shots per game (1.5) in Europe.

Former Chelsea and Wolves star Michael Mancienne follows him in second place, with the Hamburg man blocking an average of 1.4 per game, total 24.

Other Premier League players to feature in Europe's top 10 include Aston Villa's Nathan Baker, Chelsea' Gary Cahill, QPR's Clint Hill and Ryan Nelsen, and Adrian Mariappa of Reading.

Yet Williams is the top man, and next time you see him put his body on the line and throw himself between an oncoming shot and the goal he is protecting, remember there is nobody better in Europe.

Do the figures surprise you at all or is Williams' excellence something you are used to by now?
