The Italian prodigy who 'dreams' of playing in the Premier League

Samuele Longo is considered one of Italy's most exciting talents and he has now exclaimed his love of the English game. Could he rejoin Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton?

When Inter Milan were successful in the NextGen Series competition last season there was one player in particular that caught the eye with his stunning performances throughout the competition.

Samuele Longo scored many crucial goals in the competition. He grabbed the opener in the final against Ajax and subsequently scored in the penalty shoot-out. He also netted in the semi-final against Marseille and grabbed a late winner against PSV Eindhoven in the Group Stage match.

This season Inter Milan decided to loan him out to Spanish outfit Espanyol ina move that has mixed results for both the player and club.

His debut saw him crash home a sumptuous run and finish before the 21-year-old then saw a red-card for a second bookable offence later in the same game. His total of three goals in 18 appearances is hardly inspiring but Inter would still welcome him back to the fold at the moment. With Diego Milito out injured they have recently become so desperate to ask the likes of John Carew, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and even Nwankwo Kanu to consider playing for the club.

The Italian under-21 international has not been helped by the changing of the guard at the Barcelona-based club. Current Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino was sacked earlier in the season and Javier Aguirre is not so keen on the young striker who has not played 90 minutes since November.

He is still regarded as one of Italy’s most exciting prospects but his style of play has consistently been spoken of as ‘not suited for Serie A’.

But that is fine by us as the talented striker harbours one big dream for his professional career:

"Football is strange, but I have great confidence in my ability and I know that I should. For the future, I dream of playing in the Premier League."

For now he seems ready to continue at Espanyol and improve steadily before returning to Inter Milan:

"I'd be happy for another year. We'll see what will happen, but I think at the moment only about playing and continuing to fight for a starting spot. I do not know about any Inter regrets, I only know that for the moment I am very happy here at Espanyol."

But if he truly dreams of a Premier League career one man who was very keen on his talents is currently fighting to keep a certain South Coast club in the division. If he does so than Samuele Longo may grace St Marys next season.

Here he is in action…
