Arsenal put up a brave fight against Bayern Munich and were only a goal away from going through to the last eight. Here are our player ratings for the match.
Plenty of people were expecting Arsenal to go to Germany last night and get trounced. However, it was completely the opposite and they put in an efficient performance which they can be thoroughly proud of.
Fabianski: 7 – Considering it was his first senior appearance for over a year, he did superbly. Never made an error and his distribution was useful in setting up counter attacks.
Jenkinson: 7 – More of the same please. Seems to be maturing with every high profile situation he’s faced with. The pressure doesn’t affect him and both sides of his game; going forward and getting back were solid.
Mertesacker: 6 – Relatively anonymous for large chunks of the game, which is a compliment to how Arsenal played. Use Koscielny well to compensate for his lack of pace and dealt with everything in the air.
Koscielny: 6 – Solid and made key interceptions at key times throughout the game. Resisted his urge to pull the Arsenal defence higher up the pitch which was significant.
Gibbs: 6 – Handled Arjen Robben well down his side of the pitch but needs to be stronger against wingers who show a desire to come back inside. His pace helped him get forward for attacks and provide an extra outlet.
Rosicky: 6 – Was poor in the first half, giving the ball away frequently and misreading the play on several occasions. Looked frustrated that his teammates weren’t on the same wavelength.
Arteta: 7 – Showed great maturity in the middle of the pitch and great leadership. Ensured Arsenal kept their composure and stayed calm after both goals, which prevented them from making mistakes.
Ramsey: 5 – Seems to be a little bit hit and miss at the moment and similarly to Rosicky, he gave the ball away frequently in the first half when Arsenal were starting to build some pressure.
Cazorla: 6 – Kept everything ticking over nicely, moving the ball and trying to get the ball into Giroud as quickly as he could. Retained the ball well and rarely gave it back to Bayern easily.
Walcott: 7 – Looked dangerous down the right throughout the game and it’s a bit of a mystery as to why he was taken off. Delivered a superb ball for Arsenal’s first goal.
Giroud: 7 – Showed what he’s capable of when he’s up for a match and willing to get stuck in. Couldn’t miss with the goal he scored and looked a real threat throughout, also allowing Arsenal to hit the ball long.
Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho: N/A – Neither really had long enough to make a massive stamp on the game. Some good build up work from Gervinho and some probing runs from Oxlaide-Chamberlain.
