Former Manchester United starlet looks set for first international call-up

France Football

Rumours in France believe Juventus youngster Paul Pogba and Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane are to be rewarded with inaugural Les Bleus call-ups for their recent good form.

When Manchester United lost Paul Pogba this summer it was a huge blow to the club. The teenage midfielder had arrived in Manchester from Le Havre in 2009 in somewhat controversial circumstances amid a ‘tapping up’ scandal between the two clubs.

However the youngster grew tired of reserve team football and left Old Trafford for pastres new in 2012 by signing a free transfer with Italian champions Juventus.

Since then he has come on leaps and bounds; becoming an integral member of the first team and scoring the odd spectacular goal here and there.

The teen has played at multiple levels for the French youth teams all the way from under-16 level to under-20; captaining his country on numerous occasions during that time and now it seems his 25 games and five goals this season have done enough to earn him the ultimate honour.

It is being rumoured in the French press that Didier Deschamps is ready to reward Pogba, Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane and Lille winger Dmitri Payet for their good form with call-ups to the national team. It will be Pogba and Varane’s first ever call-up to the full national team while Payet will be in the squad for the first time in three years.

Deschamps had this to say on the player earlier in the week:

“Paul will be a phenomenon when he’s been playing at these levels for three or four seasons. However, there is no doubt that he has interesting potential. He has the characteristics and the right head to flourish. You don’t play in so many games for Juventus by chance. I speak to Juventus boss Antonio Conte regularly. We’re friends. I’m calm because Paul is in the right hands. Paul’s time will come with the national team. His future just depends on him. He’s already on my preliminary list for the games against Georgia and Spain. You’ll have to see if he makes the final squad.”

If he was to make the final squad it is likely he will play alongside former team-mate Patrice Evra in the games with Spain and Georgia at the end of the month.

The squad is announced on Thursday morning and Manchester United fans may take not of a former young talent making it at international level.

Do you think Pogba has earned a call-up?
