Lambert: I’m not bothered who Benteke is linked with

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is making all the right noises for Christian Benteke to stay on at the club past this season.

Christian Benteke has been the stand out performer for Aston Villa this season and his performances have attracted the interest of several top Premier League and European clubs.

However, Paul Lambert has always judged the situation well and has chosen now to come out with some quotes, which seem to suggest the Belgian will not be going anywhere whether Villa stay in the Premier League or not.

“The big guy, over the course of the whole season, has been excellent for someone just 22 years of age.”

Spot on and it leads to the natural assumption of why Villa would even contemplate letting him move on. He’s been the key figure in the team and the one player that has dragged the attack through key games.

“I don't need to say much to Christian. He is a young guy still learning but his performances have been exceptional.”

Again, spot on. Benteke must know that he is valued massively by Villa and they don’t want him to go anywhere else. Why would he, when he’s at a club where he’s paid well and guaranteed to start in every game.

“He has been massive to us and also scores goals for a very talented Belgium side.”

His presence at Aston Villa doesn’t seem to have affected his role with the Belgian national team, in fact he’s been able to amplify his core skills to a level where he’s regularly selected to play in international games.

“Will Benteke be coveted by a lot of clubs? It's a hard one to say because he has only been here for a few months.”

He’s bound to be due to the regularity with which he’s been scoring goals but Lambert is a stubborn manager. If he doesn’t want Benteke to leave, which he plainly doesn’t, then he’ll make it as difficult as possible and will try as hard as possible to keep his star man.

Villa fans, do you think he’ll stay?
