Can Arsenal emulate Barcelona and why is Rory McIlroy standing in that woman’s kitchen eating an apple?

Arsenal have their work cut out tonight, writes David Kelly, while also getting a certain irritation off his chest.

Some have called Barcelona’s performance last night miraculous, others have called it historic – the latter is fairly accurate but the former, not so much.

Those who know Barcelona and looked at that team sheet, and subsequently wrote them off …. they need their heads examined.

So too do the good folks in the marketing department at Santander; their latest adverts featuring Jenson, Jess and Rory are nothing short of cringe worthy, and somewhat creepy.

If anything, as a Santander customer, I’m thinking of changing who I bank with – I certainly won’t be jumping at the opportunity to start paying for the privilege of having a current account.

If Rory were to appear in my kitchen later this evening and started munching on one of my apples I’d have no hesitation in ringing the local constabulary while reaching for my cricket bat at the same time.

Arsenal in the past have been likened to Barcelona, mostly due to their style of play but are never mentioned in the same breath when talking about the number of Champion’s League trophies in their cabinet. Could this be Arsenal’s year?

Can Arsene turn that frown upside down by somehow pulling a Champions League winning streak out of the bag? The odds are against them, I haven’t checked what they currently are but they’re probably worth a flutter if you’re the betting type.

Can you imagine the scenes if Arsenal won the Champion’s League at Wembley? Arsene’s facial muscles have probably atrophied to the point where a smile might be unmanageable but it would be interesting to see him try.

I have to say I feel somewhat sorry for him, not least because he’s constantly harangued by Piers Morgan, of all people!

So we’ll wait and see – by the time you read this they may already be defeated and out and all you’ll have left to contemplate are where they go next, probably while watching that creepy Santander advert.

So here’s to a good game and to a miracle, for Arsene and The Arsenal!
