Proof Arsene Wenger is a masochist

Szczesny Foreground

Arsenal have 'rested' Wojciech Szczesny from tomorrow's match with Bayern Munich.

Arsenal have chosen to play at the Allianz Arena tonight with either Lukas Fabianski or Vito Mannone in goal.

Let's say that again, Arsenal have chosen to make the impossible task, even more difficult.

Now Szczesny is not a goalkeeper who has been in the best of form, he's been poor by his standards of last season, but the decision seems slightly mad.

Neither Fabianski or Mannone have played a first team game for months.

Polish stopper Fabianski has not played a single first team match all season, while Mannone has not featured since November. It might not be so bad had either been featuring of late, but they haven't.

Not even in the FA Cup was he given a run out, with Wenger electing to pick Szczesny throughout the competition, which they were eliminated from last month at home to Blackburn.

Now Arsenal are 3-1 down from the first leg, and the initial reaction to 'resting' Szczesny indicates that Wenger has prioritised the weekend's clash with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, in their mission to catch Spurs and finish in the top four.

Yet the objective of finishing in the top four is to play in the Champions League, so giving up on the competition they are still in - for one more night perhaps - certainly is contentious.

Wenger, a pragmatist, may argue Arsenal have no chance tomorrow night, and saving his first choice goalkeeper for Swansea is the right thing to do, but 'giving up' is hardly the right attitude to be sending to his team or supporters.

Would he really be resting him with the tie at 0-0? He said today the task was 'not impossible' - but it's a heck lot harder when you rest your first choice goalkeeper?

Arsene Wenger has been criticised by many for failing to spend money at his disposal and making his own job even harder, and refusing to pick his first choice goalkeeper in the Allianz Arena is just further proof, that at heart, Wenger is a masochist who is preparing himself for a version of footballing torture tomorrow night.

What do you think of Wenger's choice to 'rest' Szczesny?
