Manchester United have been tipped with a possible summer move for Luka Modric from Real Madrid but they need a more rounded player.
Luka Modric would be a very good player at Manchester United, make no mistake about that but he is not the midfielder that will help to drive the side forward for several reasons.
Firstly, he doesn’t improve the size of the Manchester United midfield which is already quite small.
A bigger midfield makes a team more imposing to the opposition and this is definitely something United could benefit from. Someone like Kevin Strootman of PSV Eindhoven would be ideal in this respect.
Modric is also a player who needs protection in a side because of his size, which is not something United can or should be looking to offer him.
United cannot afford to effectively waste a position in the middle of the pitch in order to give Modric someone who is going to stop the opposition from bullying him on the ball.
They need someone who is going to show the same strength as Paul Scholes or Michael Carrick in a midfield battle and not someone who can easily be barged off of the ball.
They also have an exact replica already in the midfield in the shape of Shinji Kagawa and a young and developing player in Tom cleverly, who could aspire to the sort of role in the team that Modric would play.
Although the roles that Modric and Kagawa play are different, they are very similar types of player; they’re both small, quick, agile and like to thread creative passes through the opposition defence.
Modric will not be a cheap signing if he’s sold this summer and there are simply other areas of the midfield that United need to address.
He’d also take time to settle back into the ways of Premier League life because it’s an obviously more physical league than La Liga.
If Sir Alex Ferguson allows Kagawa to play in his more favoured central role frequently, then the signing of Modric would be pointless and would take away valuable funds from areas of the team that do need to be improved.
United fans, do you think you need Modric?
