The Metro is linking Liverpool with a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jeremy Menez this summer.
Liverpool are not too far away from having a midfield which is going to be very competitive in the Premier League this season and hopefully push the side back into a Champions League place.
Brendan Rodgers is a manager who seems to get the balance between giving youth a chance and buying in stars just about right, and there are many reasons Jeremy Menez should be one of the club’s main signings this summer.
To begin with, he’s only got a year to run on his current deal at PSG which means Liverpool won’t have to break the bank to get him. This is significant considering the recent publication of accounts emphasising Liverpool’s current inability to spend tens of millions on players.
The fee being quoted by the Metro currently sits at £6 million which is something Liverpool should be able to stretch to.
He seems to have everything as a midfielder which should confident a combination of Lucas, Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho next season.
He’s effective in attack having bagged a couple of goals for PSG this season and he’s disciplined going the other way having only been booked on three different occasions.
Liverpool already have some extremely talented midfield players but they all have very specific roles in the side and don’t particularly have a utility side to their game. Steven Gerrard is the only exception but he’s always been more effective in attack.
His presence in midfield allows Liverpool to do three things; play two out and out wide wingers, provide extra protection to the back four which allows Gerrard to bomb on and release Coutinho to play in the hole when needed behind Luis Suarez.
The beauty of having him at Liverpool is that he allows Rodgers to use other players prominently and effectively, just as much as playing a dynamic role in the side himself.
PSG are hunting silverware regularly and the Champions League is not at the very top of the list, which means they will continue to make squad additions which free up competent footballers like Menez who can be utilised in effective ways by other clubs.
It’s a much more realistic option for the club than some of the other midfield players they have been linked with, most notably Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid and Christian Eriksen from Ajax.
Liverpool fans, would you like to see him in a red shirt?
