News and gossip from The Emirates.
The big news at Arsenal today has to be the injury to Jack Wilshere. The England international picked up a knock on his ankle during the North London derby and he is expected to be out for three weeks as the medical team try to treat the inflammation on the joint.
It comes the day after Bayern Munich confirmed that Franck Ribery would miss the game with a similar problem and deals a huge blow to the belief that a miracle comeback could be on the cards in Munich.
Wilshere will also miss the Premier League tie with Swansea and England’s World Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Montenegro.
Olivier Giroud believes the tie is not over, as long as Arsenal manage to score the first goal. The Frenchman refuses to give up on the idea of a place in the final eight of the competition and believes that an early goal could pave the way for a miraculous comeback for The Gunners.
More team news for the crunch European tie suggests that other key members of the team will also miss out on the game. Lukas Podolski has a similar problem to Jack Wilshere so will miss the game while Wojciech Szczesny is expected to be given a rest. Lukasz Fabianski is in the squad along with Andrei Arshavin and Kieran Gibbs, according to Goal.com. The full 18-man squad can be viewed here.
Reported Arsenal transfer target Stevan Jovetic has spoken about his future and insisted his current focus is solely on his Italian club Fiorentina. The Montenegrin forward has been a constant target for teams such as Arsenal while Manchester City are also reportedly very interested in his signature but for now it seems any deal will have to be out on ice.
Meanwhile some confusion has started over the apparent approach for David Villa in January. It was widely believed that Arsenal had made a formal enquiry for the Spanish record goalscorer however that has now been contradicted by Blaugrana’s sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta who insists there was never a written offer for the striker.
Barcelona are however expecting an £8.5 million bid for wantaway goalkeeper Victor Valdes. The Spanish international has announced his decision to leave the club which has alerted Arsenal to his services at a cut-price.
And finally Arsenal’s under-21s were successful in their game with Southampton last night. On a freezing night at Underhill it was goals from Kyle Ebecillio and Chuba Akpom that secured a 2-0 victory for The Gunners.
