Reading have sacked Brian McDermott this afternoon.
Reading have sacked manager Brian McDermott after losing 3-1 to Aston Villa, leaving them locked level on points at the foot of the table with QPR.
It is no doubt harsh on the manager who against all odds got them promoted to the Premier League, but when does a sacking in football surprise us any more?
You see we have been here before earlier in the season, with Southampton when Nigel Adkins was fired, except he was given the boot after claiming a draw at Stamford Bridge.
It wasn't too long ago Reading were picking up points against Chelsea themselves with their own comeback, but the Royals owner Anton Zingarevich said this afternoon he felt 'a change was necessary'.
No decision has been made on a replacement other than that the search has already begun, so let us point Reading in the direction of a man we have already mentioned, who should replace the unfortunate McDermott.
That man is Nigel Adkins, who was unceremoniously dumped by Southampton, and put simply has a point to prove.
He has kept a diplomatic silence on his sacking, no doubt conditions of a generous payoff, but he would surely love nothing more than to bolster his reputation and end the season a Premier League manager.
If Reading do stay up, one of the teams they will be looking to overhaul is Southampton. It would be poetic justice for Nicola Cortese if Nigel Adkins managed to do just that.
Reading fans should Nigel Adkins get the chance? Who do you want in and what do you think of the decision to sack Adkins?
