Liverpool shouldn't care on missing out on Benedikt Howedes

Liverpool defensive target Benedikt Howedes has signed a new contract at FC Schalke, but the club shouldn’t be too bothered.

They shouldn’t be too bothered because they are not in a dreadful position when it comes to their defence.

Yes, they do need to make additions to the back four in the summer but there are several reasons why missing out on Howedes is not the end of the world.

Brendan Rodgers is not a manager who panics, he doesn’t waste money and he doesn’t sign players for the sake of it.

He will take his time weighing up various options and looking at different targets who may be more suitable for the club than the big Schalke centre back. It’s become a trait at his time in charge of the club.

There is also the fact that Martin Skrtel hasn’t left the club yet which means Liverpool still own a high quality defender, who is just out of favour with the manager a little bit at the moment.

Skrtel has been tipped with a move away from the club this summer but he’s not come out and categorically stated that he wants to leave, which means he could still be used. After all, his contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2016.

Liverpool have also been linked with other centre backs, possibly more suited to the Premier League or the way Liverpool play.

Ashley Williams is a name that keeps coming up in various online media sources, suggesting he could link up with Rodgers who was previously his manager at Swansea City.

Williams offers that butch, dynamic, no nonsense sort of defender which will be missing from Liverpool when Jamie Carragher calls time on his playing career after May.

There are also defenders such as Carlos Zambrano Liverpool have been linked with who are maybe more suited to the style of play Liverpool are current deploying.

Zambrano is a more stylish and elegant defender currently playing for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. He could relish a move to a bigger club such as Liverpool.

There’s no doubt missing out on Howedes is a blow because he’s a very good player but it’s not the end of the world and Liverpool can sign someone who is just as effective and consistent.

Liverpool fans, who do you want the club to sign?
