Has Southampton stopper Artur Boruc earned a contract renewal this summer?

St Marys Southampton

The Pole has transformed his fortunes since arriving at the club but has he done enough to earn a new contract when his current deal expires in June?

Earlier in the season I may or may not have (I definitely did) referred to Artur Boruc as the ‘Roley-Poley-Goalie’ and I stand by it in terms of that moment in time. Southampton had just bought in the former Celtic stopper as cover after Kelvin Davis failed to adapt to the step-up in class the Premier League presented his aging body while youngster Paolo Gazzaniga, for all his promise, lacked the composure necessary to be involved in a relegation dogfight.

So enter Boruc and at first glance…what a mess.

It didn’t look like the Pole had seen a fruit or vegetable let alone a gym since his release from Fiorentina in the summer of 2012 and not even the slimming black goalkeeping top could hide the flabby jowls of the 33-year-old.

Then he decided to give credence to the theory that old habits die hard by sarcastically applauding his own fans and launching a water bottle their way in October; hardly endearing yourself to the fans.

But that is Boruc; a controversial and scary character and certainly one of the old breed ‘mad’ goalkeeper types. His consistent to-and-fro with the Rangers fans during his time in Glasgow teetered on the tightrope between tongue in cheek and downright insanity.

Then it seemed January would have to involve another search for a new keeper but you can see why nothing materialised considering the managerial upheaval at the club. If there is one position a manager truly wants to have faith in with his starting XI it will always be his goalkeeper and Pochettino will likely bring in his own favourite come the summer.

But should he?

Since his shaky start on the South Coast the Pole has certainly started to lose weight and in doing so has found some of the speed and agility to go with his undoubtedly rapid reaction time. In recent weeks he has made some stunning saves including one that simply looked impossible from Sergio Aguero during the humbling of the champions on the Solent.

This form has continued and against Norwich City this weekend he completed an excellent penalty save to deny Grant Holt the winning goal at Carrow Road on Saturday.

His recent form is certainly closer to the performances those at Celtic Park would have been accustomed to in the past but in regards to his future he has no intention of letting any uncertainty impact on his level of performance:

"I will leave it to my agent and the club. I am just doing my best and I'm working hard, so we will see what is going to happen."

Do you think Boruc has earned a contract extension for next season?
