Arsenal's mountain to climb

Allianz Arena

Arsenal have a mountain to climb in the second leg of their Champions League tie against Bayern Munich, trailing 3-1 from the first match.

Not many Arsenal fans may believe that the side is going to pull off a historic victory away at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, especially considering the side has to score at least three goals while keeping a clean sheet.

Funnier things have happened in football and nothing is impossible but Arsenal need a number of things to go in their favour if they are going to pull it off.

They are going to need to start the match all guns blazing and try to get a goal on the board early. The longer the game goes without them scoring, the more the pressure will build and cracks could start appearing.

Bayern Munich may sit back and wait for that to happen because there is no need for them to push forward and chase the game.

Arsenal have to defend better than they have done in the last couple of games because a clean sheet is the only way they will pull this off.

If they concede even a single goal then the scale of their task just gets bigger. Scoring once or twice at Bayern Munich is difficult enough so they can’t make it even more difficult for themselves.

They also need their opponents to be poor on the evening. Even an average Bayern Munich side could probably scrape their way through the tie but they really need the German league leaders to be appalling.

As unlikely as that seems, Arsenal need it to happen because it will mean Bayern are more likely to make mistakes over the course of 90 minutes and more likely to cave in to Arsenal pressure.

They need the rub of the green in terms of the decisions which are made throughout the 90 minutes; corners, free kicks and maybe even a penalty at some point.

They also need the referee to be strong and to give them the majority of decisions. The more set pieces Arsenal have, the more chances they get to stick the ball into the box.

Arsene Wenger also has a massive role to play in this game. He has to pick the right team and he has to use the right tactics, but more importantly, he has to get his players to believe they can pull it off.

Do you think Arsenal can do it?
