He has been linked with plenty of teams recently and if you believe the press reports many of those suitors come from the Premier League.
You can understand why Premier League teams would want him. Following on from the success of Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen in the Premier League another Belgian defender from Ajax would always catch the eye; in particular one that speaks perfect English and is as talented as the 24-year-old.
The interest in the player comes from further afield than just the English Premier League. In fact big spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala tried and ultimately failed to bring in the versatile defender before the close of the Russian transfer window last month.
Now Alderweireld has himself spoken about the possibility of an Ajax exit in an interview with Dutch television.
Here is what he had to say on a potential move to the Premier League:
"Yeah. It's not difficult, I focus on the team and to Ajax because that is the most important thing and I don't think it's good if I focus on a transfer because then my play is not going to be good and that's not good for anybody. I focus on Ajax and we will see after this season what I will do."
A pretty obvious and generic rhetoric but he certainly left the door open for potential movement at the end of the season.
Tottenham could certainly do with some defensive strengthening considering William Gallas will leave in the summer so you can understand why he might consider a move to White Hart Lane. He has in fact elaborated on that subject before but also mentioned North London rivals Arsenal as a potential destination:
"Ajax is a very nice club. It won't be hard to play here all my life - but if I had to choose it have to be a nice club like Ajax again and there aren't many of them. But a club such as Arsenal or Tottenham. They are fantastic clubs and would be a step forward."
Lord knows Arsenal could do with his presence. Time is running out for Per Mertesacker and it seems Thomas Vermaelen could also be sent packing in the summer.
As for Newcastle they will certainly be looking to bring in a new defender with Fab Coloccini expected to head back to Argentina in the summer.
So in regards to seeing what Alderweireld will do at the end of the season I would not be surprised to see him in the Premier League very soon.
