Arsenal travelled to Italy as the underdogs against the reigning NextGen champions and also had difficult weather conditions to deal with as heavy rain sat underfoot on a heavy surface at Centro Sportivo Facchetti.
The conditions made the style of football both teams have become accustomed to in the competition difficult to replicate leading to something of a scrappy affair that required a moment of magic in order for one team to win out victorious.
That moment of magic came from the teams captain Nico Yennaris. Playing in the heart of midfield he picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch before marching forward and hammering home a strike from all of 30 yards past the helpless Raffaele Di Gennaro in the Inter goalmouth.
Before that brilliant moment the game was scrappy with Inter going close from a half volley by Lorenzo Tassi which went marginally over and Arsenal’s best chance coming through a near own goal after good aerial work by the in-form Chuba Akpom.
Then came Yennaris’ moment of magic and Inter upped the ante in the closing stages with two Andrea Bandini crosses causing considerable trouble in the Arsenal box; and Tassi should have found the net with his back-post header which he dragged wide.
In the end Inter could not find that goal and the Arsenal bench ran on to the pitch in jubilation at the thought of a quarter-final tie with CSKA Moscow.
Here is some reaction to the victory from Twitter…
