There’s a very good chance Chelsea may axe Fernando Torres this summer which will warrant a new striker, Mario Gomez should be that man.
Chelsea have been linked to plenty of strikers over the last couple of months and rightly so because they are one of the biggest and best sides in the world.
One player they should seriously consider going after is Mario Gomez of Bayern Munich because the big German front man could dramatically improve them in several ways.
He has the experience which Chelsea will crave with the imminent departure of Rank Lampard from the team, especially considering the number of younger players currently rotating through the Chelsea side.
What Gomez guarantees is goals and it’s an asset he’s produced throughout his career. He scored 26 league goals in 30 matches last season and has six goals in 12 appearances this season as his role has declined slightly at the German league leaders.
It’s all about goals for Chelsea because at the moment, they don’t have any strikers who are cracking in goals week in and week out, which takes the pressure off of their key midfielders.
He’s also likely to be a little bit cheaper than a player like Falcao. He won’t be cheap because his current contract expires in the summer of 2016 but the club shouldn’t have to pay world record money to sign him if he’s the sort of player Chelsea’s next manager wants.
He’s a different striker to the ones that Chelsea already have so he can improve the side in many different ways.
He almost looks lazy in the way he goal hangs but again, the main feature of his game is the goals he guarantees. Having him sitting and waiting allows other Chelsea players to be more creative.
His availability is a grey area at the moment because Pep Guardiola has not walked through the door at Bayern Munich to take up his new role.
However, he doesn’t have the same sort of features and attributes which Guardiola used in his Barcelona attack; he’s not a small and quick forward who relies on his touch and skill to find space in crowded areas.
It’s hearsay at the moment but there are a lot of positive reasons why Gomez could be the striker to fire Chelsea back to glory on more than one front.
Chelsea fans, would you be happy or unhappy if Abramovich sanctioned a move for Gomez?
