Former Manchester United striker 'refuses contract offer'

Former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf is a wanted man.

We reported last month how Mame Biram Diouf is wanted by Borussia Dortmund to replace the outgoing Robert Lewandowski, and the chase for his signature is said to have taken a significant twist.

Diouf is largely known to fans of English football for a his spell at Manchester United, where he scored just one goal and failed to break into the first team, while also enjoying a season on loan with Blackburn.

In the Bundesliga, he is best known for this - a stunning bicycle kick goal netted earlier this year for Hannover in their 5-4 defeat to Schalke.

But he is no one goal wonder. Not in Germany. Over there he has been a regular scorer, with 15 in all competitions this season, making it 25 in total since signing with Hannover last January.

He is one of the Bundesliga's most in-demand strikers with Borussia Dortmund eyeing him up as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Now Bild are reporting that Diouf has rejected Hannover's offer of a new contract to extend his current deal beyond 2014, with it confirmed by sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.

Dortmund have confirmed their interest, while also discussing other targets, with manager Jurgen Klopp stating: "A very interesting player. We watch and check the market. And we have it sometimes looked at Diouf, but also Abdellaoue (also of Hannover)."

Diouf's strike rate of 10 in 19 games makes him the fourth most effective striker in the Bundesliga, behind only Lewandowski, Mandzukic, and Kiessling.

Dortmund moving for Diouf, a striker now proven in the Bundesliga makes sense. It's a shame United never got to see the best of him, but all the more credit to him for bouncing back from his frustrating time at Old Trafford.

His potential transfer is certainly one to watch in the summer, especially to see how much Dortmund may bid for a player United sold for as little as £1.5 million.
