Player ratings for the Manchester United team as they were beaten 2-1 last night by Real Madrid at Old Trafford.
Fergie has said he wants to win the Champions League again before he retires but it’s not going to be this year, as Real Madrid took advantage of a controversial refereeing decision to advance to the quarter finals.
De Gea: 6 – For spells of the match he looked very comfortable in goal and when he was called upon to make some big saves, he did so before using his solid distributional skills to set up United attacks.
Rafael: 6 – Another player who looked comfortable in the first half. Dealt with Ronaldo superbly throughout the opening spell and just became overrun after United went down to ten men.
Ferdinand: 6 – Did his best to show good leadership and keep the defence organised during the second half and looked solid in the first. Stamped out an aerially threat Madrid tried to create.
Vidic: 7 – Really imposed himself on the game before and after the red card which changed everything. On another night his two bullet headers would have hit the back of the net.
Evra: 6 – Completely nullified the threat of Di Maria down the right hand side of the pitch before the winger got injured and had to be taken off. Linked up with attacks well when he could.
Nani: 6 – Regardless of whether it was a red card or not, he was having a good game up until the referee sent him off for that high challenge. Seems to be very determined at the moment and this may just spur him on.
Cleverley: 5 – Did well in the first half but looked completely overrun in the final half an hour. He has a big future at this club and he won’t be in many situations where he’s sat in front of his defence for half an hour against some of the best midfielders in the world.
Carrick: 6 – His usual self in the first half, cutting out balls and making strong tackles but similarly to Cleverley, he had no chance in the second half to stamp his influence on the midfield.
Giggs: 7 – Superb on his 1000th senior appearance for the club. Great authority in the first half and his effort and enthusiasm rubbed off on the United team when heads were starting to drop.
Welbeck: 7 – This lad is looking better with every game he plays for United. Dropped off into the midfield well in the first half and use his pace to drive into rare pockets of space, which could have led to a goal.
Van Persie: 6 – Muted for most of the match and not at his best. He’s been struggling for form lately but there were some glimpses of improvisation which guarantee he’s going to bag goals more often than going goalless.
Rooney: 5 – Never had the time to get into the game and came on at a point where United were being bossed.
