If Manchester City let Edin Dzeko leave the club this summer, it could be a terrible decision.
Edin Dzeko offers the Manchester City attack something different and unique. He is their target man, their big striker who they can use to boss the opposition and if they let him leave, it would be a terrible idea.
Dzeko does not start the ratio of games for City that he probably deserves, which is probably the reason why he’ll try and get a move away from the Etihad this summer, but no other player at the club can change games the way he does when he comes on.
His authority and maturity as an out and out centre forward means the likes of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero can go about their business, doing what they do best which is making runs and tearing apart the opposition’s organisation.
This can sometimes be misconstrued as Dzeko being lazy because he’s not haring about at the same pace and level, but this is naïve because he’s a much better player than doing a Dimitar Berbatov throughout a game.
He’s different from the touch and movement based players that City predominantly pack their side with. He could easily be replaced by a better ‘footballer’ but City would lose a core set of threats in the process.
He’s the biggest of the strikers at City so they would lose aerial threat and they would lose the ability to back into a defence and push them back towards their own goal.
That ability Dzeko has to push defenders back because of his presence is what creates the pockets of space around the midfield for a David Silva or Yaya Toure to exploit and it’s something that possibly only Carlos Tevez can do as another striker in attack.
City do need to be a little wary of becoming a small attacking side because the danger of that is it makes them predictable to the opposition, which in turn makes them much easier to contain.
His consistency is questionable but then it’s hard to iron that out when you’ve come off the bench on 13 different occasions so far this season.
He could well be on his way but City would be losing a lot if they let it happen.
