Newcastle don’t have to make cut throat decisions this summer, but there are areas of the team which need improving.
Newcastle fans may as well write off any hopes and ambitions they had for this season because the sole aim now is staying in the Premier League.
That’s not good enough for a club of the size and stature of Newcastle, which means there is going to be pressure in the summer to make key changes to the squad and starting team.
Providing Fabricio Coloccini can be convinced to stay at the club, the centre of the defence won’t need too much changing around. However, if they do let him go back to Argentina, a centre back has to be the top priority.
Mathieu Debuchy at right back is still learning about the Premier League and he should be a much more consistent player next season. Therefore, the club doesn’t need to sign a top quality right back because they already own one.
Davide Santon is one of the weaker parts of the defence which could use strengthening. A top quality left back will provide competition for the former Inter Milan man and will encourage him to improve his consistency.
In the same way the defence needs to retain Coloccini, the midfield has to retain Hatem Ben Arfa and prevent him from joining Liverpool because he’s one of the best creative and attacking players in the team.
Newcastle are blessed with great control players who can all play through central positions such as Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko so there is no need to make a change in that respect.
One area the club could use some improvement is in terms of the midfield enforcer as Cheick Tiote has struggled to produce any form of consistency in recent matches.
Papiss Cisse has struggled ever since Demba Ba left the club and he needs a bit of support up front to take the pressure off of him.
This needs to come in the form of a fresh and willing target man who can bully an opposition defence and allow Cisse to give into his natural attacking tendencies, over worrying about dominating the front line.
Cisse needs to concentrate on poaching and scoring goals, which will be helped by the presence of a bigger and physically imposing player. He may even get the hang of the offside rule in the process too.
Where do you think Newcastle need to improve?
