An Arsenal Takeover: The Positives and Negatives

Would a multi-million pound takeover deal necessarily be the best thing for Arsenal football club?

News broke yesterday that a wealthy consortium from the Middle East are looking at buying Arsenal.

Arsenal are one of the best run football clubs in terms of a business in the world but there is great debate over whether a takeover would be a positive or a negative thing for the club.

It would mean a change which some Arsenal fans may be craving. That could mean the possibility of player sales stopping and talented individuals to be plucked and brought in from various corners of the planet.

The financial security of the club would become even more secure than it already is. The £150 million wage bill should not be a problem and the £120 million cash reserve would only increase.

It would mean a goodbye to Stan Kroenke, a major shareholder, who is not particularly popular with Arsenal fans. That would mean a boost for the support base, which has the effect to rub off on the team.

It could trigger a resurgence of the club back to the glory days of when they were going a whole season without losing a game, over simply trying to get to fourth place and secure Champions League football.

Instant friction could be caused between the new owners and Arsene Wenger, who likes to run his side in a very particular way. If Wenger’s authority is challenged then he may walk or even be sacked.

Some Arsenal supporters won’t want their club to fall into the hands of a group that may treat the establishment of Arsenal, as some sort of business toy over being an actual football club.

It could put Arsenal under a lot of pressure in terms of Financial Fair Play rules initiated by Uefa, which state a club is not allowed to spend more than it makes. Any initial spending could therefore damage the club.

There will be a loss of identity among some sections of supporters if this happens. These supporters will have supported Arsenal for a very long time and won’t want the sustainable profit method of the club risked.

Arsenal fans, your thoughts?
