Arsenal latest: Including Bale banana thrower and takeover news

Bale In Net

News and gossip from The Emirates.

There has been plenty of reaction to the North London derby yesterday where Arsenal saw their local rivals Tottenham earn a 2-1 victory and a significant advantage in the race for a Champions League place next season.

Arsene Wenger has admitted his belief that qualifying for the Champions League in fourth place will be extremely difficult after the result. It will be the first time in 13 years that the club would fail to make it into the premier European competition.

Police are asking for witnesses who may have seen the fan who hurled a banana at Tottenham Hotspur goalscorer Gareth Bale. The Welsh winger has been targeted by some fans previously for potentially bearing resemblance to ‘a chimp’. Arsenal insist the culprit will be banned for life.

Rival gaffer Andre Villas Boas believes that Arsenal are in a ‘negative spiral’ of results and form that may become difficult to escape. He made the claim while comparing the form of the two North London rivals as he claimed Spurs were a team on the up considering their recent form while Arsenal have been struggling.

Carl Jenkinson has also spoke about the game and the general state of affairs at the club. The England right-back has conceded that the club does not have the consistency necessary to sustain their best performances on a regular basis.

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has been handed a six-month international ban for Denmark after he was charged with drink driving on Sunday morning. He was reportedly driving the wrong way down the road and was also over the legal alcohol limit in Copenhagen. The Danish FA acknowledged that while all their representative players are entitled to a personal life there are certain aspects which cannot go unpunished by the association.

There was talk of a potential takeover before the game on Sunday but those stories seem to have been rubbished already. The rumour was of a £1.5 billion takeover being led by a consortium from the Middle East but Arsenal have confirmed that neither of the clubs biggest shareholders, Stan Kroenke and Alisher Usmanov, have any notion of selling their stakes at the club.

After it looked like Heung-Min Son was on the verge of signing a new contract last week it has now been reported that the South Korean has rejected a three year contract extension. Arsenal are one team said to be interested while Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund are also being linked with his signature.
