Tino Asprilla is not cut out to coach Newcastle...Is he?

Newcastle United have been linked with bringing back club legend Tino Asprilla as a youth coach but how will it benefit the club?

Tino Asprilla was brilliant fun during his Newcastle United days, whether you support the club or not, you couldn’t argue that his flamboyant style of play and goal celebrations made him just a bit entertaining.

He’s now being linked with a move back to Newcastle as a youth team coach which could have a number of benefits for the club.

The biggest attribute that he can bring to the table is that he knows the Colombian league and transfer market very well, which will give the club a great chance of unearthing the next Falcao.

He’s already highlighted his homeland as an area that Newcastle can exploit because the majority of other Premier League sides are looking to Spain and Portugal to pick up young players.

The main worry for Newcastle fans is that he doesn’t have much coaching or managerial experience which means it’s a risk for the club to put the future of their best youth players in his hands.

However, he can counter that worry via his own personality and charisma, which is quite uplifting and will help to take the pressure away from some of the younger players at the club.

This is significant because Newcastle is a huge club with a massive and loyal following of supporters. If youths can’t enjoy themselves alongside this sort of pressure, then they may never fulfil their potential.

As entertaining as he was to watch, there is also a big debate over whether he was a good enough player to be able to pass on his experience and expertise.

Asprilla managed only nine goals in 48 appearances for the club which puts him up alongside Fernando Torres in terms of goal droughts. Atletico Nacional was the only club where he held a respectable strike rate; 35 goals in 78 matches.

A better approach for Newcastle could be to give him a scouting position because he is clearly well linked to current Colombian football.

They can utilise him to exploit a current market which not many English clubs pay close attention to and he seems to have the best interests at heart for Newcastle and the ability to spot a decent player.

Newcastle fans, do you want him back?
