1. 1461 - Edward IV secures his claim to the English thrown by defeating Henry VI’s Lancastrians at the battle of Towdon

2. 1848 - For the first time in recorded history the Niagara Falls stops flowing. An ice jam in the Niagara River above the rim of the Falls causes the water to stop

3. 1867 - The North America Act is passed by the British Parliament, creating the dominion of Canada

4. 1936 - The German people overwhelmingly vote in favor of reoccupying the demilitarized Rhineland zone and abandoning the clauses of the Versailles treaty restricting the military

5. 1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are found guilty of passing atomic secrets to the Russians and are sentenced to death

6. 1964 - Model Elle MacPherson is born

7. 1971 - Lieutenant William Calley is found guilty of murder at a court martial for his part in the My Lai massacre, which claimed the lives of 500 South Vietnamese civilians

8. 1971- Charles Manson and three of his followers receive the death penalty for the 1969 murders of actress Sharon Tate and six others

9. 1973 - The last U.S. troops leave South Vietnam

10. 1987 - Hulk Hogan takes 11 minutes, 43 seconds to defeat Andre the Giant in front of 93,136 fans at Wrestlemania III

11. 1981 - Thousands of people jog through the normally quiet Sunday streets of the capital to try and cross the finish line of the first ever London marathon
