6. 1972 - The British army is largely cleared of blame for Bloody Sunday, which ended in the deaths of 14 civilians in Northern Ireland

7. 1987 - The first showing of The Simpsons airs, which had originally been created as a series of shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show

8. 1987 - Tennis player Maria Sharapova is born

9. 1995 - President Clinton condemns the 'evil cowards' behind a huge car bomb which has killed at least 80 people in the Oklahoma bombing

10. 2005 - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is elected Pope

11. 2006 - Italy's Supreme Court rules that Romano Prodi wins the country's general election, after the result was challenged by the standing Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi
