RPC – the City law firm – has strengthened its market-leading Banking and Financial Litigation team with the hire of Jonathan Cary as a partner.

Cary joins from Shearman & Sterling's London office where he specialises in financial litigation, both in the UK and globally. Having trained and qualified at Herbert Smith, Jonathan spent three years working out of Hong Kong, where he handled a wide range of financial and general commercial disputes, including contentious regulatory.

Cary's experience includes advising a major bank over prospective shareholder claims in England and its defence of a multi-billion US dollar class action litigation commenced in New York. He has also acted for an international auction house in a dispute with a bank over the priority of respective security interests in a valuable collection of antiquities.

While in Hong Kong, he acted for various companies and funds in respect of investigations by the Securities and Futures Commission, the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the ICAC, including in related internal investigations.

He is dual-qualified in England & Wales and Hong Kong.

RPC Managing Partner Jonathan Watmough said: 'RPC is one of the few firms in the City which can both handle substantial and complex litigation and is free enough from conflicts to be able to act against the major investment banks and financial institutions.

'This part of our business has grown rapidly over the last four years, and we are continuing to see a significant amount of work coming through the door. Jonathan's arrival will help us meet this growing demand and continue to offer our clients the high quality service and expertise that we are known for'.

Cary said: 'RPC has established itself as a major player in the financial and banking litigation market, and has lawyers with outstanding reputations in the field. This – combined with the strength, quality and broad reach of its litigation expertise – gives me an excellent platform to develop my own practice and contribute to further growth.

'I'm very much looking forward to joining the team and helping it take advantage of the volume of work available in the market, not just in London but also alongside RPC's disputes practice in Hong Kong'.

Head of Banking and Financial Litigation at RPC Tom Hibbert said: 'We've been looking for some time for the right person to help us continue to grow our offering for clients, and we're delighted to have found someone of Jonathan's calibre who fits so well with the way we like to do business at RPC.

'His expertise complements our existing practice, and will bring a valuable added dimension to what we are able to offer'.

RPC's Banking and Financial Litigation team also includes partners Simon Hart and Andy McGregor.

Among other cases they are handling, the team is currently acting for CF Partners in its high profile claim against Barclays for misuse of confidential information.
