A round-up of news and views relating to Newcastle United.
Danny Simpson has reassured Newcastle fans that he will give his all for the club despite the fact he is likely to leave on a free in the summer. Simpson’s contract expires at the end of the season, and having fallen behind Mathieu Debuchy in the pecking order, the 25 year old will probably leave St James’ Park to ensure regular football.
Alan Pardew has said he is delighted with the amount of quality he now has available in his squad, and believes Newcastle can compete in both the Premier League and the Europa League as a result:
"Obviously I've got to change personnel but now we've got the quality and depth to do it.
"We didn't have the strength we have now on the bench.”
Faustino Asprilla is in talks to take up a role with Newcastle’s academy. The former striker is keen to see more Colombian players join the club, and pass on his experience of the game to aspiring youngsters.
Ryan Taylor has said he is dreaming of being fit in time to play against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby in April. The defender has been side-lined for most of the season after injuring his knee ligaments in August last year, but hopes to have an impact in the closing weeks of the season:
“I haven't really got a date or a game in mind but one game I would love to be back for is the derby - and it's a realistic target to be aiming for that.
"It's seven or eight weeks away and I'd love to be in contention for that game. But I've just got to see how the next few weeks go and hopefully then I can join back in with the boys and enjoy the last six weeks of the season.”
On HITC this week we look at how one of Newcastle’s transfer targets has taken fewer shots than only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo this season. Mathew Nash also includes Davide Santon in his leftfield candidates for PFA young player of the year, and Lewis Doe argues Liverpool should already be planning a raid for Hatem Ben Arfa this summer, and that Martin Kelly might help them do so.
AC Milan have reportedly cooled their interest in signing Santon, with suggestions the player is now out of their price range. Newcastle are reportedly demanding €10m for the player.
Shane Ferguson has joined Sammy Ameobi on loan in the Championship, with the midfielder going to Birmingham City. Newcastle are hoping both players can get regular first team action, with Ferguson not featuring for the Magpies since the 7-3 loss to Arsenal in December.
