Carlos Zambrano could be the perfect replacement for Martin Skrtel, if he’s forced to leave Liverpool.
Martin Skrtel’s not happy with the reasons behind his exclusion from the Liverpool first team and there is a very good chance he could leave the club this summer.
That will create a problem for Liverpool. A problem of who will replace him and who has similar characteristics which can be imposed across the club’s back four.
Step in Frankfurt defender, Carlos Zambrano, who is remarkably similar to Skrtel in several ways.
To begin with he’s an aggressive and no rubbish sort of defender. He’s picked up eight yellow cards this season so he wouldn’t exactly be afraid of getting stuck into the physical side of Premier League football.
He’s at a club that is surpassing expectations this season as Eintracht Frankfurt currently sit in fourth place. This means he could be available at the sort of price that Liverpool will be able to pay this summer.
He’s consistent having been selected for and starting 20 out of the 23 league games for Frankfurt this season. That gives off the impression that he’s very difficult to drop once he’s in the side and in form.
His age is also significant. At 23-years-old, he’s around the sort of age that Ian Ayre, Liverpool’s managing director, has said would appeal to the club in any transfer in the foreseeable future.
His chances of staying in the Peruvian national team would also be substantially enhanced by a move to Liverpool, which is likely to bring with it a lot more attention and pressure.
He also has leadership skills, taking his first captaincy position during his days at Schalke as he led the Under-19 team.
That’s very important when you also consider that Jamie Carragher is not going to be in the Liverpool team next season, as he’s due to retire.
What that means is Liverpool will have a player in Zambrano who is perfectly suited to making sure the Liverpool defence stays in shape and that every one is doing their designated job for the team.
Liverpool could go after a higher profile target who would cost more money but those days seem to be gone for the Anfield club and to be honest, they could do a lot worse than bring in this six foot plus intimidating player who just loves to defend.
Is this the sort of player Liverpool should be looking at?
