Chelsea and Aston Villa have to wait to find out which tough opposition they face in the last eight while Arsenal must first overcome Inter Milan. Meanwhile Spurs can start to prepare for a tough fixture against dark horses Sporting Lisbon.
At HITC we have been doing our utmost to keep you up to date with all the latest from Europe’s one and only premier competition for clubs youth teams with news, reviews and updates about the players who have caught the eye and the teams who have been making progress.
The tournament has now gone into the final 16 stage with several of the ties already getting under way with generally good results for English teams.
Aston Villa and Chelsea pulled off massive results beating Ajax and Barcelona respectively while Tottenham beat the tournament top seeds Paris Saint-Germain to also advance to the quarter-final stage.
There was not such good news for Liverpool who were dumped out unceremoniously by impressive Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon.
Last Friday the draw for the quarter finals was undertaken and with the competition getting back under way today we felt it was a great opportunity to bring you up to date with the final eight fixtures:
Chelsea v Juventus or Rosenborg
Inter Milan or Arsenal v CSKA or PSV Eindhoven
Aston Villa v Olympiakos or Anderlecht
Tottenham v Sporting Lisbon
As you can see only one tie is actually confirmed as the rest of the second round ties are yet to commence; and it sees Spurs face off against a Sporting Lisbon side who have thrashed Liverpool and been humbled by Aston Villa in the competition this season. Depending on which Sporting turn up it could be an interesting and difficult tie.
Chelsea will face either Juve or impressive Norwegian outfit Rosenborg while Aston Villa will feel good about taking on either Olympiakos or Anderlecht; although the two have beaten both Arsenal and Spurs respectively this season proving there are no easy ties in Europe even at this level.
Arsenal first have to overcome the threat of the reigning champions Inter Milan and then will face either CSKA Moscow or PSV Eindhoven who face off later Wednesday in Turkey (4pm GMT).
Arsenal will then have to beat Inter Milan on the 6th March to play the winners.
The quarter-final ties will take place between the 18th and 21st March and will be broadcast LIVE on British Eurosport.
What do you make of the draw? Could we have an all English semi-final?
