Manchester United may have to think outside the box to sign Rodriguez

If Manchester United really want James Rodriguez this summer, a player exchange may be most likely to tempt Porto and swing the deal in their favour with Juventus already interested.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking for another way to push his side on again ahead of next season and it may come in the form of James Rodriguez.

Everyone knows all about the links suggesting the ‘next Ronaldo’ is Old Trafford bound but it may not be as straight forward as United pushing cash in the table, if they seriously want him.

Rodriguez’s goals and assists fiures from last season up to now are superb; 20 goals in 27 league matches, add to that Champions League goals and it becomes obvious very quickly that he’s more important to the club than money alone.

What that means is United are going to have to come up with a slightly different deal if they want to sign him because Porto will take cash, it’s going to have to be a lot of it.

There are obvious candidates in the Manchester United squad who could be use to balance out a deal. Nani’s future has been in doubt this season but United are working on a new contract for the Portuguese winger, who could be ironically useful in convincing Rodriguez to join.

Anderson could be a good candidate if United need to include a player or two in the deal. There is no doubt he’s an extremely talented midfielder but he’s not the sort of player that United can’t live without.

Anderson is of course a former Porto player, a club who did see the best of him, and they would certainly be interested in having him back.

Rodriguez would be coming to Manchester United as an attacking midfield player who could also play in the whole behind Robin Van Persie.

It could mean that the presence of the Colombian forces United to dispense with one of their four strikers, most likely Javier Hernandez, in order to push the deal through.

Either way United may have to lose a player from their current squad, a squad which has dominated the Premier League this season and is fighting for silverware on two other fronts.

However, if they really want Rodriguez and of all of the rumours aren’t fabrication then they should make it impossible for Porto to reject any deal by putting a lot of cash and a high class player on the table.

Do you see it happening?
